The Flying Club Cup

Released in 2007, The Flying Club Cup is the second studio album by Beirut, the project of New Mexico native Zach Condon. Following the breakout success of Gulag Orkestar, Condon moved his focus from Balkan brass to the traditions of French chanson, inspired by artists like Jacques Brel. The album was recorded in Albuquerque and at Arcade Fire's Petite Église studio in Quebec. A pivotal element of the album's sound is the contribution of Owen Pallett, whose intricate string arrangements provide a baroque sophistication that distinguishes this record from its predecessor. The album is conceptually tied to a 1910 photograph of a hot air balloon festival, which informs its turn-of-the-century aesthetic. Critically, it solidified Condon's reputation as a precocious composer capable of blending disparate global folk traditions into a cohesive, indie-accessible format. It remains his most critically revered work, often cited as a high-water mark for the mid-2000s chamber folk movement.
