The August Engine

Released in 2003 after a year of label-hunting, The August Engine is the sophomore effort from Hammers of Misfortune and widely considered their creative breakthrough. Led by primary songwriter and guitarist John Cobbett, the album refined the 'heavy metal opera' concept of their debut into a more cohesive, albeit still highly complex, sonic statement. The album is notable for its rejection of contemporary metal production trends; instead of triggered drums and digital precision, it embraces a live, breathing sound characterized by the prominent use of the Hammond organ and intricate vocal counterpoint. The inclusion of guest musicians on violin and cello for the track 'Rainfall' highlights the band's folk and chamber music sensibilities. This record solidified the band's reputation as a 'musician's band,' blending the epic scale of Manilla Road with the sophisticated arrangements of 70s Genesis.
