Eclipse

Released in 2005, Eclipse is a landmark in the Amorphis discography, marking the debut of vocalist Tomi Joutsen. This transition was critical for the band, as Joutsen's ability to switch between a velvet-smooth baritone and powerful death growls allowed the group to reintegrate the heavier elements of their early career while maintaining the melodic sophistication of their middle period. Conceptually, the album is a focused exploration of the Kullervo legend from the Kalevala, utilizing lyrics adapted from a play by Paavo Haavikko. Sonically, it is noted for its prominent use of vintage keyboard sounds, such as the Hammond organ and Moog, which provide a '70s progressive rock texture rare in melodic death metal.
