Struggle

Released in 1999 on the independent Jugular Records, Struggle serves as the official debut for Nonpoint, though it evolved from an earlier 1997 independent release titled Separate Yourself. The album is a foundational text for the South Florida metal sound, characterized by a heavy emphasis on percussion and rhythmic 'bounce' rather than traditional melodic structures. Sonically, it is much rawer than their major-label breakthrough, Statement, which would eventually re-record several of these tracks. The recording features a prominent, high-mixed bass guitar and a dry drum sound that emphasizes the band's funk and groove influences. Critically, it is noted for avoiding the cliches of the rap-metal era by integrating the vocal delivery as a rhythmic instrument. It remains a cult favorite for its unpolished energy and its lyrical references to the late-90s rave and club culture of Miami, particularly on tracks like Double Stacked.
