Stained Class

Released in 1978, Stained Class is widely regarded by critics and historians as the foundational text for the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and speed metal. It marks a significant shift from the band's previous work, moving toward a more streamlined, aggressive sound while retaining the progressive complexity of 'Sin After Sin.' This is the only album to feature songwriting contributions from all five members, including drummer Les Binks, whose technical proficiency enabled the band to explore faster tempos. Recorded at Chipping Norton Recording Studios, the album features a 'dry' production style that emphasizes the interplay between the guitars. Lyrically, it is noted for being significantly darker and more sophisticated than its peers, dealing with themes of suicide, alien invasion, and spiritual corruption. Despite its initial modest chart performance, its influence on the subsequent decade of metal is immeasurable.
