Something Special

Released in September 1981, Something Special solidified Kool & the Gang's status as the premier R&B crossover act of the early 80s. Following the massive success of Ladies' Night and Celebrate!, this album completed a trilogy of platinum records produced by Eumir Deodato. Deodato’s influence is palpable in the album’s sophisticated arrangements and 'dolphin-smooth' production, which moved the band away from their gritty 70s funk roots toward a more melodic, pop-oriented sound. The album is most famous for the global hit 'Get Down on It,' a track that redefined the use of the 'chant' in R&B and became a staple of dance floors worldwide. However, the album also showcases the band's versatility, including Motown-inspired soul on 'Take My Heart' and a rare foray into the 'quiet storm' aesthetic with the closing track 'No Show.' Critically, it is regarded as one of the most successful transitions from disco to the modern R&B era, proving that the band could maintain their soul credentials while achieving massive mainstream success.
