Skeleton Tree

Skeleton Tree marks a radical pivot in the Bad Seeds' discography, moving away from the narrative songwriting that defined Nick Cave's career toward a more abstract, impressionistic style. While recording began as a follow-up to the synth-heavy Push the Sky Away, the sessions were irrevocably altered by the accidental death of Cave's son, Arthur. Although much of the material was written prior to the tragedy, the final vocal takes and lyrical amendments are saturated with the reality of loss. Produced by Cave, Warren Ellis, and Nick Launay, the album favors avant-garde techniques, utilizing dissonant loops and non-standard structures. It was released alongside the documentary 'One More Time with Feeling,' which captured the fragile recording process. Critically, it is regarded as one of the most significant works of the 21st century, praised for its bravery and its unique fusion of ambient electronica with raw, confessional performance.
