Silence

Released in 2001, Silence is the sophomore effort from Sonata Arctica and is widely considered the peak of their early 'speed power metal' era. Following the success of Ecliptica, the band leaned further into progressive song structures and theatrical themes, most notably on the seven-minute 'The End of This Chapter,' which initiated a multi-album lyrical saga. This record marked the return of founding member Marko Paasikoski on bass and the only appearance of keyboardist Mikko Härkin, whose neoclassical style defined the album's bright, harpsichord-heavy sound. Sonically, it bridges the gap between the straightforward melodic speed metal of Stratovarius and the more experimental, quirky direction the band would take in the late 2000s. It is characterized by its high-tempo 'winter metal' aesthetic and remains a fan favorite for its balance of aggressive double-bass drumming and tender, chart-topping ballads like 'Tallulah.'
