Schizophrenia

Released in 1987, Schizophrenia is the second studio album by Sepultura and marks the debut of lead guitarist Andreas Kisser. This lineup change was transformative, shifting the band from the primitive death/black metal of Morbid Visions toward a more sophisticated, technical thrash metal sound. Recorded at J.G. Studios in Belo Horizonte, the album's production is famously drenched in reverb, a characteristic of the Cogumelo Records era that adds a haunting, subterranean atmosphere to the tracks. The songwriting shows a massive leap in maturity, particularly on the instrumental 'Inquisition Symphony,' which features complex arrangements and multiple movements. Critics, including AllMusic, have noted that while the production is dated, the album's historical importance as a bridge to Beneath the Remains cannot be overstated.
