Sail Out

Released in late 2013, Sail Out served as the major-label introduction for Jhené Aiko following her 2011 mixtape 'Sailing Soul(s)'. Produced largely by Fisticuffs and No I.D., the EP is a cornerstone of the 'alternative R&B' wave that redefined the genre in the early 2010s. It is notable for its fusion of ethereal, neo-soul vocal sensibilities with the darker, more minimalist textures of cloud rap and ambient music. The project features a high-profile roster of TDE affiliates, including Kendrick Lamar and Ab-Soul, which helped bridge the gap between R&B and the burgeoning 'conscious' rap scene of the time. Critically, it was lauded for its cohesive mood and Aiko's ability to maintain a distinct, soft-spoken identity amidst heavy-hitting features.
