Released in 1974, Rejuvenation represents the creative peak of The Meters' transition from a strictly instrumental studio unit into a powerhouse vocal funk group. Recorded at the legendary Sea-Saint Studios and produced by the visionary Allen Toussaint, the album benefited from the state-of-the-art (for the time) recording environment which preserved the band's signature dry, punchy sound while adding a professional sheen. This record is historically significant for its influence on the development of hip-hop; tracks like 'Just Kissed My Baby' became foundational sampling material for artists like Public Enemy and EPMD. Unlike their Josie Records era, Rejuvenation incorporates elements of swamp rock and country-soul, reflecting the diverse musical melting pot of New Orleans. The centerpiece, 'It Ain't No Use,' is a rare example of a funk band sustaining a singular, mournful groove for over eleven minutes without losing momentum, showcasing the telepathic communication between the four original members.
