Caught in the Act

Released in February 1975, Caught in the Act is the Commodores' second studio album and represents the peak of their 'hard funk' phase. Produced by James Anthony Carmichael, the record solidified the band's transition from a successful opening act for the Jackson 5 into a headlining force in their own right. The album is anchored by the hit 'Slippery When Wet,' a track so influential in its rhythmic construction that it served as a blueprint for the funk-rock crossover hits of the following year. Sonically, the album is dominated by the interplay between Ronald LaPread's aggressive basslines and Milan Williams' percussive keyboard work, particularly the Hohner Clavinet D6. While 'This Is Your Life' hints at the sophisticated balladry that would later make Lionel Richie a superstar, the majority of the tracklist - including the instrumental 'I'm Ready' - is dedicated to high-tempo, syncopated dance music.
