On the Beach

Released in 1974, On the Beach is the centerpiece of Neil Young's 'Ditch Trilogy,' a series of albums where he intentionally retreated from the massive success of Harvest into darker, more experimental territory. Recorded largely at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, the sessions were famously fueled by 'honey-slides' (a potent mixture of sautéed marijuana and honey), which contributed to the album's murky, sluggish, and deeply atmospheric sound. The record features a diverse cast of collaborators, including Rick Danko and Levon Helm of The Band, as well as members of Crazy Horse and CSNY. Sonically, it balances biting electric blues-rock with some of Young's most profound acoustic songwriting. Lyrically, it is one of his most pointed works, addressing the Manson murders, the oil crisis, and his own discomfort with stardom. Despite its initial mixed reception, it has grown into one of his most critically revered works, cited as a major influence on the lo-fi and slowcore movements of the 1990s.
