Oasem

Released in 2011, Oasem is the second full-length album from I Am Oak, the project of Dutch musician Thijs Kuijken. Following the success of his debut, Onmachtig, this record solidified the 'I Am Oak sound': a blend of minimalist indie folk and rich, multi-tracked vocal arrangements. The title, which means 'breath' in a regional Dutch dialect, perfectly encapsulates the album's airy, organic feel. The tracklist is notable for its mirrored structure, featuring sequels or variations (Horizon II, Distances II, Island II) that suggest a cyclical, meditative journey rather than a linear one. Critically, it was praised for its ability to create a vast sense of atmosphere with very few tools, often drawing comparisons to the early work of Bon Iver or Iron & Wine, but with a distinctly European, pastoral sensibility. It remains a cornerstone of the Dutch indie folk scene.
