Tiny Cities

Released in 2005, Tiny Cities serves as a pivotal bridge in Mark Kozelek's career under the Sun Kil Moon moniker. Following the sprawling, electric-tinged debut Ghosts of the Great Highway, this album signaled a shift toward the hyper-minimalist, acoustic-focused sound that would define his later work. Recorded at Hyde Street Studios, the album consists entirely of Modest Mouse covers, yet it functions as a deeply personal Sun Kil Moon record. Kozelek strips away the 'loud-quiet-loud' dynamics of the source material, opting instead for a static, hypnotic intensity. This was the first release on his own Caldo Verde Records, granting him the creative freedom to pursue such a niche concept. While some critics at the time found the lack of tempo variation challenging, the album has been re-evaluated as a bold deconstruction of the indie rock canon, highlighting Kozelek's unique ability to inhabit and transform external narratives.
