Moon Pix represents the definitive turning point in Cat Power's career, moving from the jagged indie rock of her early work toward a more atmospheric, soul-inflected folk sound. The album's creation is legendary: after a terrifying hallucinatory experience at a farmhouse in South Carolina, Chan Marshall wrote most of the material in a single night of frantic inspiration. She then traveled to Melbourne to record with Mick Turner and Jim White, whose intuitive, jazz-inflected playing style provided the perfect foil for her skeletal compositions. The resulting record is a landmark of the 1990s slowcore and indie folk movements. It is particularly noted for its use of space, its occasional use of loops (as on 'American Flag'), and its raw emotional honesty.
