Milk and Scissors

Released in 1996, Milk and Scissors is the second studio album by The Handsome Family and represents a critical turning point in their discography. Following their more aggressive debut, Odessa, this record sees the duo of Brett and Rennie Sparks beginning to embrace the 'Gothic Americana' sound that would eventually define their career. The album was recorded during a period of stylistic transition, blending the distorted, noisy guitar work of their early years with the traditional Appalachian instruments and murder-ballad structures they would later master. Lyrically, the album is a tour de force of dark storytelling, featuring vignettes about Amelia Earhart, Emily Shore, and the mundane tragedies of modern life.
