Master Box is a pivotal EP in Robert Stillman's discography, marking a period of intense focus on the physical mechanics of sound. Recorded during Stillman's apprenticeship in a player-piano workshop, the album serves as a sonic exploration of the piano's 'innards.' Moving away from traditional jazz structures, Stillman utilizes the instrument as a source of both melodic and percussive texture, often emphasizing the clatter of wood and metal over the 'sublime' tones typically associated with the piano. The production is heavily characterized by tape hiss and lo-fi aesthetics, which Stillman describes as an 'archeo-futuristic' approach.
