Killing Joke

Released in 1980, Killing Joke's self-titled debut is a foundational text for post-punk and industrial music. Recorded at Marquee Studios, the album established the band's signature 'tribal' sound, characterized by Paul Ferguson's heavy use of toms and Geordie Walker's uniquely processed guitar. While many of their contemporaries were leaning into the sparse, skeletal sounds of gothic rock, Killing Joke embraced a maximalist, aggressive approach that influenced a wide range of artists, most notably Metallica (who covered 'The Wait') and Nirvana (whose 'Come As You Are' riff bears a striking resemblance to 'Eighties' from a later album, though the seeds are here). The lyrics, penned by Jaz Coleman, reflect the intense paranoia of the Cold War era, touching on themes of social control, nuclear war, and primitive human instincts.
