Hollow Kind

Released in early 2009, Hollow Kind served as the debut EP for Villagers, the project of Irish singer-songwriter Conor O'Brien following the breakup of The Immediate. Recorded largely in a home-studio setting, the EP captures O'Brien at his most vulnerable and unadorned. While later Villagers albums like 'Becoming a Jackal' would introduce more complex arrangements and art-pop sensibilities, Hollow Kind is defined by its starkness and its debt to the 'freak folk' movement of the mid-2000s. The track 'The Meaning of the Ritual' became a cornerstone of his early live sets, showcasing his ability to blend literary, almost gothic lyricism with hauntingly simple melodies. Critically, it was hailed as a significant arrival in the Irish indie scene, marking O'Brien as a songwriter of exceptional depth and precision. The EP's maritime themes and claustrophobic production create a cohesive, singular mood that remains distinct within the Villagers discography.
