Released in 2001 on Phthalo, Her's Is > [sic] serves as the debut full-length from Alfred Darlington, better known as Daedelus. While later albums would cement his reputation for whimsical, Victorian-inspired glitch-pop, this debut is a much more raw and experimental affair. It sits at the intersection of the burgeoning LA beat scene and the established IDM traditions of labels like Warp or Rephlex. The album is characterized by its heavy use of micro-sampling, where Darlington takes tiny fragments of jazz, swing, and romantic-era music and recontextualizes them into jittery, abstract hip-hop structures. The production is intentionally lo-fi and murky, emphasizing the 'dust' of the vinyl sources. Critically, it is viewed as a precursor to the monome-driven 'controllerism' style he would later master, showing an early fascination with the tactile deconstruction of sound.
