Heart Break

Released in 1988, Heart Break represents the definitive 'coming of age' moment for New Edition. Following the departure of Bobby Brown, the group recruited Johnny Gill, whose mature baritone fundamentally altered their vocal dynamic. Working with producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis at Flyte Tyme Studios, the group moved away from the bubblegum pop of their youth toward the emerging New Jack Swing movement. The album is notable for its sophisticated use of the Fairlight CMI and Roland TR-808, creating a signature 'swing' that influenced a decade of R&B.
