Released in 1993, 12 Play marked the transition of R. Kelly from a group member in Public Announcement to a solo powerhouse. Sonically, it is defined by Kelly's self-produced 'vocal stacking' technique, where he recorded dozens of his own harmony tracks to create a massive, church-influenced wall of sound applied to secular, often explicit themes.
