Freedom Suite

Recorded in February 1958 for Riverside Records, 'Freedom Suite' is a pivotal entry in Sonny Rollins' discography, primarily known for its side-long title track. This 19-minute composition was one of the first extended suites in modern jazz and was accompanied by a bold manifesto regarding the state of Black Americans, making it a precursor to the more overt protest jazz of the 1960s. Sonically, the album continues Rollins' exploration of the 'pianoless trio' format (tenor, bass, drums), a configuration that highlights his immense melodic inventiveness and rhythmic independence. Accompanied by Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach, Rollins uses the lack of harmonic accompaniment to pivot freely between keys and textures.
