Bop‐Be

Released in 1978 on ABC/Impulse!, Bop-Be represents the final studio recordings of Keith Jarrett’s 'American Quartet.' This ensemble, featuring Dewey Redman on tenor saxophone, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums, was instrumental in bridging the gap between traditional post-bop and the more experimental, spiritual jazz of the 1970s. The album consists of outtakes and remaining material from the sessions that produced 'Byablue,' yet it stands as a cohesive and vital document of the group's chemistry. Sonically, it is characterized by Jarrett's angular, often percussive piano style and Redman's earthy, Ornette Coleman-influenced saxophone lines. While Jarrett would soon become synonymous with his solo piano concerts and his 'Standards Trio,' Bop-Be serves as a reminder of his deep roots in the collective improvisational tradition.
