Released in 2009, Empire serves as the pivotal introduction of Tyler 'Telle' Smith as the frontman for The Word Alive. The recording is historically notable within the scene for the fact that Smith, primarily a melodic singer at the time, had to develop his screaming technique during the actual tracking sessions under the guidance of producer Andrew Wade. This necessity birthed a raw, strained vocal character that distinguishes this EP from the more controlled performances on their debut LP, Deceiver. Musically, the EP is a cornerstone of the 'Fearless Records sound' of the era, blending technical metalcore proficiency with the atmospheric electronics that would become a band staple.
