Dropsonde

Released in 2005 on Touch, Dropsonde marked a significant stylistic shift for Geir Jenssen. After a decade defined by the 'arctic ambient' sound of Substrata, Jenssen turned his attention to the rhythmic structures of jazz. The album heavily utilizes samples from 1950s and 60s jazz records, but strips them of their original context, looping fragments of percussion and bass to create a downtempo, nu-jazz framework. This record is often cited as a companion piece to his later work, but it stands alone for its specific 'dusty' production quality. Critics praised the album for its ability to maintain Biosphere's signature sense of space while introducing a newfound rhythmic complexity. It occupies a unique position in his discography as his most 'human' and urban-focused work, moving away from the natural world toward a more psychological, interior landscape.
