Discreet Music

Released in 1975, Discreet Music is the definitive starting point for Brian Eno's ambient philosophy. While he had experimented with textures on 'Another Green World', this was his first dedicated foray into music as an environmental factor rather than a focal point. The title track was famously inspired by Eno's convalescence after a car accident, where he was forced to listen to a record playing too quietly to hear clearly, leading him to realize music could be 'ignorable as it is interesting.' The A-side utilizes a generative system involving two Revox tape recorders, where the output of one feeds into the input of the other, creating a long-delay loop that allows the music to build and decay autonomously. The B-side, featuring the Cockpit Ensemble, applies similar logic to classical music, using algorithmic-style instructions to create variations on Pachelbel's Canon. Critics, including those at AllMusic, view it as a radical departure from the art-rock of his early career and a cornerstone of the minimalist movement.
