Converge

Released in 1991 (often cited as 1992 due to distribution), this self-titled 7-inch EP is the debut release from Converge. Recorded long before Kurt Ballou became a world-renowned producer, the sonic character is defined by a lo-fi, DIY aesthetic typical of early 90s East Coast hardcore. While the band would later become synonymous with 'mathcore' and technical complexity, this EP showcases a more straightforward, metallic hardcore sound influenced by the likes of Born Against and Starkweather. The lyrics, particularly on 'Blind,' already hint at the deeply personal, confessional themes that Jacob Bannon would explore throughout his career. It remains a rare and sought-after piece of hardcore history, representing the transition from traditional punk to the more experimental, aggressive structures that would eventually define the genre in the 2000s.
