August Burns Red

Released in 2003, this self-titled EP (often referred to as the 'Looks Fragile After All' era or simply the debut EP) represents the earliest recorded output of August Burns Red. Recorded before the band signed to Solid State Records and before the arrival of long-time vocalist Jake Luhrs, the EP features original vocalist Jon Hershey. Sonically, it is a significant departure from the 'technical metalcore' label the band would later define. The production is decidedly lo-fi, characterized by a 'garage' aesthetic with high-mid guitar frequencies and a dry drum mix. While the polyrhythmic complexity that would become Matt Greiner's signature is present in embryonic form, the structures are more aligned with early 2000s melodic hardcore and screamo. It serves as a crucial bridge between the raw Pennsylvania hardcore scene and the polished, progressive metalcore movement of the late 2000s.
