Blessed Are the Sick

Released in 1991, Blessed Are the Sick is the sophomore effort from Florida's Morbid Angel and stands as a pivotal moment in the evolution of death metal. Following the landmark Altars of Madness, the band made a conscious decision to incorporate slower tempos and more complex, classically-influenced arrangements. Lead guitarist and primary composer Trey Azagthoth famously dedicated the work to Mozart, a tribute reflected in the album's sophisticated use of counterpoint and its structured, almost symphonic flow. The production is notably warmer and more spacious than their debut, allowing the 'lava' guitar tone - a signature sound characterized by heavy use of the whammy bar and harmonizers - to create a dense, psychedelic atmosphere. The album also integrated re-recorded material from their 1986 demo, Abominations of Desolation, bridging the band's primitive roots with their new, avant-garde direction. Critically, it is regarded as a masterpiece that expanded the lyrical and sonic boundaries of the genre, moving death metal away from slasher-film tropes toward Sumerian mythology and cosmic occultism.
