Beyond Sanctorum

Released in 1992, Beyond Sanctorum is the second studio album by Therion and represents a pivotal evolutionary step in their discography. While their debut was a relatively straightforward death metal affair, this record introduces the avant-garde and symphonic elements that would later define the band's career. Recorded at Sunlight Studio, it retains the classic Swedish death metal 'HM-2' guitar sound but incorporates keyboards, clean vocals, and complex song structures. Lyrically, Christofer Johnsson moved away from social commentary toward occultism and Lovecraftian horror, most notably on the track 'Cthulhu'. The album is highly regarded for its 'The Way', an eleven-minute epic that showcases the band's burgeoning progressive tendencies. Critically, it is viewed as a landmark of the early 90s experimental metal scene, proving that death metal could be both brutal and sophisticated.
