10,000 Days

Released in 2006, 10,000 Days stands as Tool's most emotionally direct and sonically diverse work of their initial run. Moving away from long-time producer David Bottrill, the band self-produced the record at Grandmaster Recorders, resulting in a punchier, more 'present' sound than the ethereal Lateralus. The album is anchored by the two-part 'Wings' suite, a 17-minute tribute to singer Maynard James Keenan’s mother, which utilizes field recordings of rain to create a somber, immersive environment. Musically, the album features Danny Carey’s most advanced use of electronic percussion and Adam Jones’s introduction of the talk box, most notably on the single 'Jambi'. While it contains radio-ready hits like 'The Pot', the album's core lies in its sprawling, 11-minute centerpieces that blend progressive metal with ambient textures. It remains a landmark for its integration of complex polyrhythms into a heavy rock framework, further solidified by its Grammy-winning stereoscopic packaging.
