Life Is But a Dream… represents the most radical departure in Avenged Sevenfold's career. Inspired by the philosophy of Albert Camus and the absurdist movement, the album was recorded over a multi-year period with producer Joe Barresi. It abandons the band's signature dual-lead harmony focus in favor of a 'kitchen sink' approach to composition, incorporating elements of jazz fusion, industrial music, and 1970s progressive rock. Notably, the track 'Mattel' critiques the artificiality of modern life, while 'Cosmic' serves as the emotional centerpiece, utilizing vocoders and brass sections. The album's final three tracks - 'G', '(O)rdinary', and '(D)eath' - form a conceptual suite exploring artificial intelligence and mortality, culminating in a classical piano title track. Critics have noted its 'unhinged' creativity, marking it as a landmark in avant-garde metal that challenges the listener's expectations of the genre.
