High-energy New Zealand pop rock with massive choruses and sun-drenched guitar hooks. Perfect for road trips and nostalgic summer afternoons.
Zed captures the specific, shimmering energy of early 2000s guitar pop, delivering a sound that feels like a permanent summer vacation. Their music is built on a foundation of crunchy, distorted guitars that somehow remain incredibly bright and accessible, paired with vocal melodies that are engineered for mass singalongs. It is the sound of optimism filtered through the lens of post-grunge alternative rock, stripping away the angst and replacing it with pure melodic momentum.
What truly sets them apart is the tightness of their arrangements and the sheer scale of their hooks. While many of their contemporaries leaned into the darker side of the era, Zed embraced a polished, high-fidelity production style that made every snare hit and guitar jangle feel monumental. There is a distinct 'Kiwi' warmth to the recordings, a sense of unpretentious joy that makes even their more contemplative tracks feel communal rather than isolated.
Start with 'Silencer' to hear the band at their commercial and creative peak. It is a masterclass in turn-of-the-millennium pop rock, featuring tracks that defined the New Zealand airwaves for years. If you want something with a bit more grit and evolution, 'This Little Empire' shows the band expanding their sonic palette while keeping their knack for undeniable choruses intact.
Zed is a New Zealand rock group, which was formed as Supra in 1996 in Christchurch by Ben Campbell on bass guitar and triangle, Nathan King on lead vocals, guitar and trumpet, and Adrian Palmer on drums and percussion. In 2000 they added a second guitarist, Andrew Lynch. Their debut album, Silencer (2000), peaked at No. 1 on the New Zealand Albums Chart; while their second album, This Little Empire (November 2003), reached No. 3. Their top 10 singles are "Glorafilia" (1999), "Renegade Fighter" (2000), and "Hard to Find Her" (2003). They toured New Zealand, Australia and United States before disbanding in 2004. They have reformed periodically including in 2017, 2019 and 2023.
