Young Knives emerged from the mid-2000s UK indie explosion but quickly separated themselves from the 'landfill indie' movement through a rigorous adherence to art-punk aesthetics and a distinctive visual identity. Formed by brothers Henry and Thomas Dartnall alongside drummer Oliver Askew, the band's early work was characterized by a 'tweedy' Englishness and angular, Gang of Four-influenced guitar work.
Their debut full-length, 'Voices of Animals and Men' (2006), earned a Mercury Prize nomination and established them as critical darlings who could also navigate the UK Top 40. Over the following two decades, the band transitioned from the sharp indie-pop of 'Superabundance' to the more abrasive and experimental territories of 'Sick Octave' and 'Barbarians'. Y. approach, often self-producing and exploring themes of human brutality and social decay. Their influence is felt in the current wave of 'speak-sung' UK post-punk, though they remain more melodically adventurous and satirically focused than many of their successors.
