Young Galaxy is a Montreal-based outfit led by Stephen Ramsay and Catherine McCandless that has undergone one of the most successful aesthetic pivots in modern indie music. Originally emerging in 2005 with a sound rooted in the expansive, guitar-heavy traditions of shoegaze and psych-rock (drawing comparisons to Slowdive and Spiritualized), the band fundamentally redefined themselves with 2011's 'Shapeshifting'.
This transition was facilitated by a remote collaboration with Dan Lissvik of the Swedish duo Studio, who helped the band strip away guitar density in favor of minimalist synth-pop, Balearic rhythms, and a more focused electronic palette. This 'Swedish era' earned them significant critical acclaim and a Polaris Music Prize long-list nomination. Their work is characterized by McCandless's ethereal, often submerged vocal delivery and a production style that emphasizes space, digital clarity, and rhythmic pulse. They occupy a unique cultural position as a bridge between the Montreal indie-rock scene and the international electronic-pop community, influencing a wave of 'dream-rave' and sophisticated synth-pop acts throughout the 2010s.
