Intro

Yeni Türkü sounds like a warm breeze coming off the Aegean Sea. Their music is a masterfully balanced blend of traditional Anatolian instruments like the oud and baglama with Western classical elements like the flute, piano, and violin. The result is a sound that feels both ancient and modern, deeply rooted in Turkish soil but possessing a sophisticated, universal melodic appeal. It is music that prioritizes texture and emotional resonance over raw power.

What makes them truly distinctive is their relationship with literature. By setting the works of major Turkish poets to music, they created a 'New Folk' that was intellectually rigorous yet incredibly accessible. Derya Köroğlu’s gentle, steady vocals provide a sense of continuity and comfort, even when the lyrics touch on complex social or political themes. The arrangements are often airy and spacious, allowing the interplay between the woodwinds and strings to create a lush, cinematic atmosphere.

Start with the album Akdeniz Akdeniz or the compilation Her Dem Yeni. These records capture the band at their peak of cultural influence, offering a perfect introduction to their signature Mediterranean sound. It is the ideal soundtrack for moments of reflection, quiet social gatherings, or any time you want to feel a sense of connection to history and nature.

Yeni Türkü (means New Türkü in Turkish) is a Turkish band. The group has held concerts and has recorded a number of albums since forming in 1978. Their musical style is characterized by a combination of traditional Turkish and modern musical instruments, including the oud, baglama, kemenche, qanun and guitar. Their music reflects influences of music from around the world (one example is Inti-Illimani). All group members have changed several times throughout the years, with the exception of the lead singer Derya Köroğlu. After the coup of September 12, 1980, the album Buğdayın Türküsü, composed of poems by names such as Nazım Hikmet, was banned. For this reason, Yeni Türkü's career was interrupted for a short time.
