Yak emerged from the London scene in the mid-2010s as a vital corrective to the polished indie-pop of the era. Led by the charismatic Oliver Burslem, the trio quickly earned a reputation for chaotic, high-energy live performances that often bordered on performance art.
Their sound identity is a volatile mix of 1960s garage-psych, Stooges-esque proto-punk, and the abrasive textures of 1990s noise rock. Their debut, Alas Salvation (2016), was produced by Pulp’s Steve Mackey, which helped sharpen their raw edges into a cohesive, albeit frantic, statement. Their follow-up, Pursuit of Momentary Happiness (2019), saw the band leaning into more expansive, psychedelic arrangements while maintaining their signature grit. Critically, they were hailed as one of the few bands capable of translating the danger of a live show onto a studio recording. Despite their relatively short lifespan before an indefinite hiatus in late 2019, Yak left a significant mark on the UK guitar scene, influencing a wave of bands seeking a more visceral and unpredictable sound.
