Xscape emerged from Atlanta in the early 1990s as the premiere female group for Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label. Discovered by Dupri at his own birthday party, the quartet - comprised of sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scott, Kandi Burruss, and Tameka 'Tiny' Cottle - brought a distinct gospel-trained pedigree to the burgeoning New Jack Swing and Hip-Hop Soul movements.

Their sound identity is characterized by powerful, church-honed lead vocals and sophisticated four-part harmonies that often favored lower, richer registers than their peers. Throughout the 90s, they achieved three consecutive platinum albums, navigating the transition from the playful 'Just Kickin' It' era to the more mature, ballad-heavy 'Traces of My Lipstick'. Culturally, they represent the 'Atlanta Sound' of the decade, bridging the gap between the raw hip-hop influence of the early 90s and the polished neo-soul of the late 90s.
