WZRD

Murky, late-night rock that feels like a lonely drive through a neon-lit city. Minimalist riffs and space-age synths for moments of deep introspection.

Intro

WZRD sounds like the internal monologue of a late-night wanderer. It is a project that strips away the polished sheen of modern hip-hop in favor of raw, fuzzy guitar riffs and skeletal drum machine patterns. The music occupies a hazy middle ground between psychedelic rock and indie pop, characterized by a persistent sense of cosmic loneliness and melodic warmth. It feels like a private experiment caught on tape, where the imperfections are the point.

What makes the duo distinctive is the way they translate hip-hop sensibilities into a rock framework without relying on traditional genre tropes. Kid Cudi’s signature humming and melodic phrasing serve as the primary emotional engine, while Dot da Genius provides a production bed that is both sparse and immersive. The guitar work is famously intuitive, favoring simple, evocative hooks over technical display, which gives the tracks an approachable, almost vulnerable quality.

Start with the self-titled album 'WZRD' to hear the full scope of their vision. Tracks like 'Teleport 2 Me, Jamie' showcase their ability to blend romantic longing with synth-driven atmosphere, making it the perfect entry point for those who appreciate music that feels both intimate and expansive.

WZRD (pronounced "double-u zee ar dee") is an American alternative rock band and record production team composed of longtime friends and frequent collaborators Dot da Genius and Kid Cudi. Formed in New York City in 2010, Cudi originally named the band Wizard, inspired by British heavy metal band Black Sabbath's song of the same name. However, Cudi renamed the band on two occasions, the first being in April 2011 to 2 Be Continuum, explaining: "I needed something more original, something different...". The second time occurred in November 2011, to the band's current namesake. The eponymous debut album, WZRD, was released in February 2012, peaking at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album was supported by the lead singles, "Brake" and "Teleport 2 Me, Jamie".
