Wolfstone

High-octane Scottish folk that hits with the weight of stadium rock. Fiddles and bagpipes battle electric guitars over driving rhythms for a massive, cinematic sound.

Intro

Wolfstone sounds like the Highlands of Scotland if they were electrified. It is a massive, muscular sound where the ancient wail of the bagpipes and the frantic agility of the fiddle are treated with the same reverence and volume as a lead guitar. The rhythm section doesn't just support the folk melodies; it drives them forward with a heavy, rock-and-roll engine that feels more at home in a stadium than a quiet pub.

What makes them distinctive is the lack of compromise. They don't 'soften' the folk elements for a rock audience, nor do they 'unplug' the rock for folk purists. Instead, they create a wall of sound where the pipes and distorted guitars occupy the same frequency space, creating a unique, harmonized roar. It is music that feels both deeply rooted in soil and history, yet modern and aggressive in its delivery.

Start with 'The Chase' or 'Year of the Dog' to hear the band at their most explosive. These albums capture the peak of their 90s energy, where the transition from a traditional reel to a heavy metal breakdown feels not just natural, but inevitable. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who finds traditional folk too polite or mainstream rock too generic.

Wolfstone are a Scottish musical group founded in 1989, who play Celtic rock. Their repertoire consists of both original songs and traditional folk pieces. They have released seven studio albums, the latest, Terra Firma, in 2007. The band record on their own label, Once Bitten Records. The group are named after the "Wolfstone", a Pictish stone originally sited at Ardross, Easter Ross, close to where the band initially recorded.
