Intro

Josh Wink creates music that feels like a physical object being twisted, stretched, and warped in real-time. It is the sound of machines pushed to their breaking point, characterized by the iconic 'squelch' of the Roland TB-303 and a relentless, hypnotic drive. While it fits squarely within the techno and house tradition, there is a distinct sense of psychedelic unease that permeates his best work, turning dancefloors into sites of intense, internal exploration.

What sets Wink apart is his mastery of tension. He doesn't just play loops; he manipulates them with a surgeon's precision, using 'mistake theory' to find beauty in digital artifacts and filter screams. His tracks often feature long, agonizing builds where the frequency cutoff slowly rises until the sound is almost piercing, only to drop back into a deep, tribal groove that feels like a massive release of pressure.

For the uninitiated, 'Higher State of Consciousness' is the essential starting point, a masterclass in how to turn a single synthesizer line into a global anthem. From there, dive into 'Don't Laugh' for his more surreal, playful side, or explore the 'Profound Sounds' series to hear how he weaves disparate tracks into a singular, breathing narrative.

Joshua Winkelman (born April 20, 1970), better known by his stage name Josh Wink, is an American electronic dance music DJ, label owner, producer and remixer. He is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A pioneering DJ in the American rave scene during the early 1990s, Wink was the most prominent exponent of the tribal forms of techno and house in the U.S. In 1995, he released several hits, including "Don't Laugh" (as Winx), "I'm Ready" (as Size 9) (which hit number one on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart), and "Higher State of Consciousness," which topped the dance charts in Europe. He has had many club hits such as "How's Your Evening So Far?" (samples Lil Louis's "French Kiss") and "Superfreak (Freak)" and has also gained much attention for his remixes of Stabbing Westward, FC Kahuna, Paul Oakenfold, Moby, Towa Tei, Ladytron and Depeche Mode, among others.
