Intimate acoustic folk meeting soft electronic pulses. A quiet, cinematic evolution from a veteran songwriter finding beauty in the stillness.
William Ryan Key creates a sound that feels like a deep, steady exhale. It is a far cry from the high-octane energy of his past, trading distorted guitars for the warm hum of analog synths and the delicate pluck of an acoustic guitar. The music is spacious and unhurried, often feeling more like a private conversation or a series of polaroid snapshots than a traditional pop performance. It carries a distinct sense of place, often evoking the damp, green stillness of a Pacific Northwest forest or a quiet studio at 3 AM.
What makes this project distinctive is the way Key integrates his growing interest in electronic music into a singer-songwriter framework. Rather than just playing 'unplugged,' he uses modular synths and ambient textures to create a bed of sound that feels living and breathing. His vocals have shifted from the anthemic projection of his youth to a soft, breathy delivery that emphasizes the vulnerability and maturity of his lyrics. It is the sound of an artist who has stopped trying to reach the back of the arena and is now focused on the person sitting right in front of him.
Start with the EP 'Thirteen' to hear the initial transition into stripped-back storytelling, then move to 'Everything Except Desire' to experience his full immersion into ambient-influenced, cinematic arrangements. It is perfect for listeners who appreciate the quiet intensity of artists like Phoebe Bridgers or the atmospheric folk of Bon Iver's middle period.
