Intro

Will to Power sounds like the intersection of a Miami dance club and a soft-rock radio station in 1988. Their music is defined by the sharp, syncopated snap of the Roland TR-808 drum machine, layered with shimmering synthesizers and a distinct Latin-influenced rhythmic swing. It is a sound that feels both high-energy and deeply sentimental, capturing the specific 'freestyle' era where electronic dance music began to embrace pop balladry.

What makes them truly distinctive is producer Bob Rosenberg's background as a radio mix DJ. This manifests in their clever use of medleys and covers, taking classic rock staples and re-contextualizing them through a dance-pop lens. The vocals are often breathy and harmonized, creating a soft, romantic contrast to the aggressive, staccato percussion of the production. It is music that feels designed for the FM dial, yet retains a gritty, urban club pulse.

Start with their self-titled 1988 debut. It perfectly encapsulates the transition from the high-energy 'Say It's Gonna Rain' to the chart-topping, lighter-waving 'Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley.' It is the essential document of the Miami freestyle sound at its commercial and creative peak.

Will to Power is an American dance-pop group that originated in South Florida in the mid-1980s, founded by Miami producer Bob Rosenberg. The group recorded a number of hit singles on the Billboard dance and pop charts in the late 1980s and early 1990s, most notably "Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley", a medley of 1970s hits by Peter Frampton and Lynyrd Skynyrd that reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1988. A second hit was "I'm Not in Love", a cover of 10cc's 1975 hit: number 7 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1990. The group has also two number one singles on Billboard Hot Dance Club Play: "Say It's Gonna Rain" and "Fading Away", and continues to create music into the 21st century and are currently performing live (Bob Rosenberg and Elin Michaels).
