Whirr is a cornerstone of the 21st-century shoegaze revival, often referred to as 'nu-gaze.' Formed in 2010 in Modesto, California, the band's sound is a direct evolution of the 1990s 'Scene That Celebrates Itself,' specifically drawing from the dense textures of My Bloody Valentine and the melodic drift of Slowdive.
Guitarist Nick Bassett, a central figure in the band, brought a certain heavy-music sensibility to the project, having also played in the blackgaze outfit Deafheaven. This connection helped bridge the gap between indie-leaning dream pop and the more aggressive, 'loud' side of alternative rock. Their career is marked by a shift from the more traditional indie-rock structures of 'Pipe Dreams' to the expansive, slow-burning textures of later releases like 'Sway' and 'Feels Like You.' Despite various lineup changes and controversies, Whirr has maintained a cult-like following, influencing a new wave of bands like Glare and Trauma Ray who prioritize high-volume atmosphere and melodic melancholy.
