Whimsical

Whimsical is an American shoegaze and dream pop outfit formed in 1999 in the Chicago area. The core creative partnership consists of guitarist/songwriter Neil Burkdoll and vocalist Krissy Vanderwoude.

Their sound is characterized by a dense, reverb-heavy 'wall of sound' aesthetic heavily influenced by the 4thAD and Creation Records rosters, specifically Slowdive and Cocteau Twins. After releasing their debut 'Setting Suns Are Semi-Circles' in 2000, the band entered a long hiatus due to geographic separation, eventually resurfacing in the mid-2010s. Their return was marked by the release of 'Sleep to Dream' (2017), an album originally tracked in 2004 but left unfinished for over a decade. Critically, they are noted for maintaining the melodic integrity of indie pop beneath layers of shimmering distortion. Their later work, such as 'Bright Smiles & Broken Hearts' (2019) and 'Melt' (2022), shows an evolution toward more refined production while staying true to their ethereal roots. They occupy a specific niche in the shoegaze revival, bridging the gap between the original 90s movement and the modern 'nugaze' scene.
