High-definition neon pop that feels like a sugar rush in a video game. Hyper-saturated synths and tropical rhythms for bright, high-energy afternoons.
Wave Racer sounds like the inside of a high-end arcade machine located on a tropical beach. His music is a masterclass in maximalist digital production, where every sound is polished to a mirror-like shine and every rhythm is designed to bounce. It is a world of bright primary colors, 16-bit nostalgia, and relentless optimism, even when the melodies lean into a more wistful, sunset-drenched territory.
What truly sets Tom Purcell apart is his ability to blend the technical complexity of glitch and future bass with the unashamed catchiness of bubblegum pop. He uses vocoders not just as an effect, but as a primary emotional instrument, creating a synthetic humanism that feels both futuristic and deeply personal. The production is dense and hyper-active, filled with rapid-fire arpeggios and aquatic sound effects that pay homage to his Nintendo-inspired moniker.
Start with the 'Flash Drive' EP for the quintessential 2015 future bass sound that defined an era of Australian electronic music. Then, move to his debut album 'To Stop From Falling Off The Earth' to hear how he evolved those neon textures into more sophisticated, indie-leaning songwriting that explores the anxieties of the modern digital age.
