Intro

Waajeed's music is a masterclass in the 'Detroit sound,' a specific intersection where the grit of industrial techno meets the warmth of classic soul. His tracks often lead with a heavy, swinging drum pattern that feels human and unquantized, layered with thick synth basslines and shimmering, jazzy keys. It is music that feels equally at home in a dark, smoke-filled basement club or through high-end headphones during a solitary late-night walk.

What truly distinguishes Waajeed is his ability to maintain a hip-hop producer's ear for sampling while operating within the structures of house and techno. He treats the MPC not just as a tool for beats, but as a lead instrument, creating a rhythmic tension that feels alive and urgent. His transition from the soul-heavy hip-hop of Platinum Pied Pipers to the 'Hi-Tech Jazz' of his later solo work shows a producer obsessed with the evolution of Black electronic music.

Start with 'From the Dirt' to hear the perfect bridge between his hip-hop roots and his house music evolution. It captures the raw energy of Detroit's streets while maintaining a sophisticated, soulful polish. From there, dive into 'Memoirs of Hi-Tech Jazz' for a more experimental, electronic-forward experience that honors the legacy of his hometown's musical innovators.

Robert O'Bryant IV (born 1975), also known as Waajeed is an American music producer from Detroit, and one half of the hip hop and R&B group Platinum Pied Pipers, and a founding member of Tiny Hearts. He formed the Bling47 record label in 2002, which has released projects by J Dilla, Waajeed himself, and others. Since 2013, he has preferred the name Jeedo.
