Polished, piano-driven Dutch pop that hits the sweet spot between romantic ballads and upbeat radio anthems. Perfect for nostalgic nights and heartfelt singalongs.
Volumia! captures a specific era of Dutch musical history where big emotions met even bigger melodies. Led by the charismatic Xander de Buisonje, their sound is anchored by prominent piano lines and a brass section that adds a soulful, almost theatrical weight to their pop foundations. It is music that feels lived-in and deeply earnest, avoiding irony in favor of direct emotional connection.
What truly sets them apart is the chemistry between the polished studio arrangements and Xander's distinctive, slightly raspy croon. They mastered the art of the 'Nederpop' ballad, building songs from intimate verses into explosive, cathartic choruses that were designed to be sung by thousands of people at once. The inclusion of saxophone and rich backing harmonies gives it a warmth that feels more organic than many of their nineties contemporaries.
For the uninitiated, their self-titled 1998 album is the definitive starting point. It contains the essential hits that defined their career and showcases their ability to pivot from tear-jerking ballads to lighthearted, rhythmic pop. It is the sound of a band that knows exactly how to pull at the heartstrings without losing their sense of melody.
Volumia! was a band from Heerlen, Netherlands. They started as a cover band and later developed an original repertoire of Dutch songs. The band existed from 1993 until 2002. They reached the Dutch Top 40 many times, scored a number of awards and golden records. After 2002 several band members started a solo career. Lead singer Xander de Buisonje launched a solo CD in the Netherlands and Belgium. Saxophone player Harold Mingels from The Hague played with the Crazy Piano's and later on in his own group The Corona's. Singer Tamara Hoekwater presented several programs for TV network L1, sang with the Big Bands Swing Design with Greg Walker (Santana) and The Jack Million Band in Northern America. Today she lives in Amsterdam and performs jazz music.
